Alas, no, the hipster did not originate in Portland. Even though it might feel that way. But for those of you interested in Oregon apparel and Portland gear, you’ve probably seen someone who embodies modern hipster culture. But did you know: hipsters are not a modern creation.
Roots in the 40’s
Hipsters - also hepcats or hepsters - emerged during and after World War II. They were a subculture of jazz-lovers with relaxed attitudes, jazz-influenced dress, sarcasm, and self-imposed poverty (or at least the appearance of it). It started as younger middle class white folks sought to imitate and embody the lifestyle of black jazz musicians. Can you see the trend?
The Modern Hipster
Hipsterism in the modern age saw a resurgence that began in New York. This new subculture was also groups of middle class white kids emulating but not mimicking black music culture. In this case, they jumped into the music scene but didn’t jump on board with rap fashion. Instead, the modern wave of hipsters discovered Salvation Army to inspire their hipster rap.
Wait, what? Hipster Rap?
That doesn’t sound like the hipsters you know, right? Well, don’t worry, you didn’t miss anything. That hipster rap culture rapidly jumped into other musical genres as well. Heavy metal and Indie “I knew them when nobody knew them” bands gained just as prevalent a hipster following. The primary idea here was one of rebellion. Not in-your-face punk anarchy. Hipster rebellion is simpler. It’s an attempt to separate from mainstream society, to not get caught up in commercialism. (Except, ya know, supporting places like Goodwill or Ray Ban). It’s about supporting local businesses and getting back to simple pleasures like a bike ride.
So, hipsters. A good thing, right?
